It’s out with the old for Corrie this New Year.
A trio of well loved wrinklies are set to be axed to save the soap some pennies.
The Daily Star reports that three golden girls are up for the chop in a bid to cut their combined salaries of £500,000 from Corrie’s costs.
First in the line of fire is Betty Driver, 88, who’s played Betty Williams, of Betty’s hotpot fame, since 1969.
Also under threat is Eileen Derbyshire, 78, who’s portrayed mousey Emily Bishop since 1961 – a year after the soap began.
Barbara Knox, 75, who’s played glamorous shopkeeper Rita Sullivan for the past 44 years, may also be forced out of the Street.
A soap insider said that the stars: “Are all at a stage where they may want to put their feet up and call it a day.”
Cost-cutting on Corrie last year saw the soap’s stars lose out on their annual Christmas party and their free butty van.
No bacon sarnies is one thing, but no Rita? Sad times.
