Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham), Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop), and John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop) joined the rest of the cast of Fringe as well as executive producer Jeff Pinkner for a panel promoting the science fiction hit, Fringe. Those in attendance were treated to a reel of highlights from the season thus far as well as the first act of this Tuesday's (2/10) upcoming episode in which we learn more about the mysterious Mr. Jones and his escape.
Answers and revelations were tough to come by due to the secretive nature of the show. However, executive producer Jeff Pinkner spoke about how the stories told so far have really only been a prologue and that there are so many more stories left to tell, particularly in regards to the Pattern. One of the few solid pieces of information fans could gather was when he stated, "we've told no lies on the show." He did admit however that the statement didn't apply to Walter because he "doesn't know up from down."
Because the show deals with fringe science, the actors have repeatedly spouted complicated jargon within their dialogue. When the moderator quizzed the panel about whether or not they knew what transmogrification was, Joshua Jackson amused fans by referencing the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes and stated that this scientific process could only happen in their animated world. Pinkner admitted to being a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan, hinting that this was not a coincidental use of the word.
Fans of the show will no doubt have noticed the flashing icons that appear before commercial breaks. Jeff Pinkner revealed that those symbols are indeed a code that fans can crack and astute viewers can use those clues to figure out what the next episode will be about.
Fans can also try to spot the fedora-wearing Observer in each episode, one of the many mysterious characters introduced on Fringe . When asked about the character's backstory, Jeff Pinkner firmly stated that the character, "is not an alien." He added that it was a conscious choice not to include any aliens in the show, mostly due to the creator's reverence for The X-Files and their mastery of that genre. It was also stated that there may be more than one Observer in the series and that we may have already met him. Joshua Jackson then had a funny anecdote regarding The Observer's ability to pop up anywhere when he complained about having terrible seats for an Eagles/Giants football game and spotted The Observer standing on the sidelines. Jeff Pinker added that Fox's plans to include the Observer in the Presidential Inauguration were unsuccessful. (He was telling the truth.)
In regards to Dr. Walter Bishop's rich and powerful ex-partner and the head of Massive Dynamic, Dr. William Bell , it was revealed that he will indeed appear this season and it was posited that he may have already been introduced. It was also announced that the producers started the show with the events of the series finale already in mind, but that they've made a conscious effort to keep the show accessible to casual fans while still constructing a rich mythology that can continue for years.
