Chuck Looks Towards the Future 2009/2/12 9:46:06

Today at New York Comic Con, Co-executive producers Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak were joined by series star Yvonne Strahovski to answer questions about the second half of the second season of Chuck and to present an exclusive clip reel, humorously titled, "Chuck vs. Comic Con NY." Included in the reel were scenes featuring recently announced guest stars Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap), who will be playing Chuck's father and Chevy Chase (SNL), who will play a Bill Gates/Steve Jobs-like character.

The inspiration for Scott Bakula's appearance comes from the fact that both Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak admitted to being huge Quantum Leap fans. Because Chuck is a throwback to action shows of the 80's, they both felt that Scott "was a perfect fit." As for Chevy Chase's guest spot, the producers said the character of Chuck was somewhat inspired by his portrayal of "Fletch" and felt Chase's sensibilities matched the feel of the show.

As for the question on everybody's mind, the producers admitted that they will continue to throw obstacles(both friend and foe) in the way to prevent Sarah and Chuck from getting together. In an upcoming arc later this season, Sarah and an MI:6 agent played by Jonathan Cake will have a fling, leaving Chuck out in the cold - which Yvonne Strahovski said excited her, simply because she felt the love scenes with a different character could be fun.

However, Chuck's life isn't completely pathetic. As the season goes on, he'll be getting better as a spy. The producers promised that Chuck would not only learn some more cool spy moves, (as evidenced by a quick clip of him firing two pistols simultaneously), but that he would also earn his first kill, a huge departure from where he started at the beginning of the series.

The general consensus of the fans in attendance was that as the second season has unfolded, the show has gotten much stronger. Josh Schwartz chalked this up as the natural progression of a show and noted that "it takes time for a show to find its voice." That said, there was no official word whether or not the show would be returning for a third season, although the producers did say they really appreciated all the support they've received from NBC, particularly the many promotions aired during the Super Bowl. However, their plans for a huge build-up on the heels of the 3-D episode have been thwarted due to President Obama's recently announced speech this Monday evening. NBC will air a rerun instead and the producers joked that Obama's first mission in office was to destroy Chuck - which would be a real shame.

Much is made of the geek references throughout the show and they pointed out that not only does Chuck have a San Diego Comic con poster on his wall, but also posters of Y the Last Man, Dune and Tron.
