Fringe is moving from one country to another – off screen that is. The series, which has been shot in New York in its first season, will now be moving to Vancouver for Season 2. Variety says the move has to do with New York's tax incentives, which have brought a lot of TV productions to the state recently, including Ugly Betty, which moved from Los Angeles to New York. However, in Fringe's case, the show was applied too late to take advantage of the program - and to save money on the expensive production, the show will now be moving.
Variety quotes a Warner Bros. spokesperson as saying, "In this challenging and uncertain economic environment, we have made the very difficult decision to move the production of Fringe from New York to Canada in the event the series is renewed for a second season. We are deeply indebted to the talented New York production crew that helped bring the first season of Fringe to life, and we thank them for their invaluable contributions to the show's success."
As referenced in that quote, Fringe has not officially been renewed by FOX for a second season yet, but this announcement seems to all but confirm it will indeed be back.
This will actually be the third city Fringe has shot in. The pilot was shot in Toronto, before production moved to New York beginning with the second episode. Of course the show is actually set in Boston, a place it has never filmed in.
The move to Vancouver brings the show to a city that has been the home of a huge amount of sci-fi/fantasy productions in recent years, including Battlestar Galactica, Reaper, The 4400, Supernatural, Smallville and all of the Stargate series. Vancouver is also where a show Fringe is often compared to, The X-Files, shot for its first five seasons, before moving to Los Angeles.
