title: sing with Troy and Gabriella
The new-school movie musical doesn't fade away. First, it gets a sing-along version. (Then it fades away.)
On Friday, High School Musical 3: Senior Year will follow in the box-office steps of Hairspray and Mamma Mia! and offer a sing-along version, onscreen lyrics and all, in 125 theaters, Disney said today.
HSM3 has been the No. 1 movie the last two weekends, grossing $61.8 million through Sunday. The sing-along version will hit theaters as the movie ventures into the hyper-competitive holiday movie season, which kicks off Friday with the arrival of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
If HSM3 really wants to pull a Mamma Mia! or Hairspray, then it'll stay in theaters until it grosses at least $100 million. Or, in the case of the still-playing Mamma Mia!, nearly $150 million.
