So ends an era: MTV has canceled The City.
"As of right now it doesn't really look like we're doing [The City] anymore," star Whitney Port told Ryan Seacrest Monday on his morning radio show.
The City — a spin-off of The Hills, which was a spin-off of 2004's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County — followed Port as she endeavored to make it in New York's fashion industry. The series debuted in 2008 to lukewarm ratings. The second season was refocused as a workplace drama with new castmembers, including Roxy Olin.
Cancelation comes as a mild surprise: The second season finale, which aired in April, saw a nice ratings boost (2.3 million viewers) following the series conclusion of The Hills. The City's demise ends the chapter on MTV reality soaps anchored by Lauren Conrad and her friends. (Conrad announced a new reality show for the network in September, but says the project will not revolve around the drama of her personal life.)
Port says chances of The City moving to another network are not likely.
