The Week in Sports TV June 11to17 2010/6/12 10:09:57

The weekend is fast approaching and with it, another opportunity for a summer barbecue or day at the beach. The only thing that could make it even better would be a great sporting event to watch on TV.

Except, you know, the biggest and most important sporting event in the entire world.

Oh, yeah. That's right, the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off today. Of course, if you believe the mainstream media, you might be under the mistaken belief that nobody in America cares about soccer, but the truth is a little different. Nielsen, for instance, estimated that some 17 million Americans watched the 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France, and according to our math, 17 million is significantly more than zero.
With that in mind, then, here's a look at all the great sporting events you can catch over the next week, including a full slate of World Cup soccer. The only problem? There's so much great sports to watch this week that you may have to end up postponing that barbecue to see everything.

Friday, June 11: Don't be fooled by the times ESPN is advertising for their coverage; often they have a half hour or even a full hour of pre-game before the actual match starts. Our times here, though, are for kickoff, because we don't want you to waste your time. World Cup schedule (all games on ESPN unless otherwise noted) -- South Africa vs. Mexico (10AM ET), Uruguay vs. France (2:30PM ET).

Saturday, June 12: This is the big one: USA vs. England at 2:30PM ET (on ABC rather than ESPN) is widely considered the most anticipated match in US soccer history. There are also two other games on the World Cup schedule today though -- South Korea vs. Greece (7:30AM ET) and Argentina vs. Nigeria (10AM ET). In other sports, the NCAA Outdoor Championships are on CBS (1PM ET), so find out which college has the best... outdoors? And Fox presents inter-league baseball (Red Sox vs. Phillies, 4PM ET).

Sunday, June 13: The NBA Finals are all knotted up at 2-2; you can find out which team will take a lead back to Los Angeles when the Celtics play the Lakers in Game 5 at 8PM ET (ABC). Also on the docket: the tastiest NASCAR event of the year, the Helluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 (TNT 1PM ET). And CBS presents the St.Jude Classic, which is a golf tournament, not a prayer-off. Other World Cup schedule -- Algeria vs. Slovenia (7:30AM ET), Serbia vs. Ghana (10AM ET), Germany vs. Australia (2:30PM ET on ABC)

Monday, June 14: ESPN takes a break from all the soccer to give you Monday Night Baseball between the Mariners and the Cardinals (7PM ET). World Cup schedule -- Netherlands vs. Denmark (7:30 AM ET), Japan vs. Cameroon (10AM ET), Italy vs. Paraguay (2:30PM ET)

Tuesday, June 15: The NBA Finals shift back to the left coast with Game 6 (9PM ET ABC). World Cup schedule -- Slovakia vs. New Zealand (7:30AM ET), Ivory Coast vs. Portugal (10AM ET), Brazil vs. North Korea (2:30PM ET)

Wednesday, June 16: ESPN's acclaimed 30 For 30 series of documentaries examines one of the strangest says in the history of sports with 'June 17th, 1994.' World Cup schedule -- Honduras vs. Chile (7:30AM ET), Spain vs. Switzerland (10AM ET), South Africa vs. Uruguay (2:30PM ET)

Thursday, June 17: One of the biggest events in golf begins today and once again, ESPN is on the spot with coverage of the U.S. Open, beginning at 1PM ET. NBA Finals Game 7 (if necessary, 9PM ET). AMC is certainly ready for some big league golf, as they celebrate the U.S. Open by airing the classic comedy 'Caddyshack' at 8 PM ET. World Cup schedule -- Argentina vs. South Korea (7:30AM ET), Greece vs. Nigeria (10AM ET), France vs. Mexico (2:30 PM ET, ESPN2)
