The Office s second string steps it up 2010/2/8 10:43:13

It's been a weird season for The Office. Just about every character dynamic established in the early run of the show has shifted. Michael's far more of a push-over. Jim and Pam are together, and slacker Jim has become a go-gettin' co-manager. Dwight's not just socially oblivious, he's downright evil. (Creed… well, Creed's pretty much the same.) The change was inevitable, though it's neutered my Office mainstays; after watching last month's clip-scravaganza "The Banker," I can't deny they're not as fun as they used to be. Dwight's antics ring more and more like late-era Homer Simpson every day: Stupid for the sake of stupidity. Jim's become a smug, holier-than-thou asshole. Pam's too removed from Jim to maintain the repartee they had in early seasons—and too removed from the rest of the office to be the voice of reason. And Michael, oh lord, has used up almost all his sympathy points. But the show's still chugging along, due in large part to the strength of its supporting players—who this season have stepped out in all their glory.
