ABC Family has picked up three new series, renewed two shows and cancelled one, says the Hollywood Reporter.
The cancelled series is Kyle XY, which had previously garnered very good ratings for the cable network, but had dropped noticeably in its current third season. The end of Kyle XY and the presumed cancellation of The Middleman (which ABC Family has been silent on since last summer) puts an end to any current fantasy/genre material on the network, which has its greatest success with The Secret Life of the Teenager and other less fantastical teen-oriented series.
Renewed for a third season is Greek, while Lincoln Heights will be back for Season 4. While Secret Diary has not been officially renewed yet, the Reporter notes that is likely due to continuing talks on how many episodes its third season will be.
The three new series picked up by ABC Family are:
10 Things I Hate About You: An adaptation of the Julia Stiles / Heath Ledger film of the same name, about two very different sisters, Kat (Lindsey Shaw) and Bianca (Meaghan Jette Martin).
Ruby and The Rockits: This comedy teams David Cassidy (The Partridge Family) and his two real life brothers, Shaun and Patrick, in a series that has some nods to the teen idol history connected to the Cassidys. In the show, Patrick plays a former teen idol who now leads a normal life as a husband and father, only for his brother and former bandmate (David Cassidy) to show up with his own teenage daughter (Spy Kids' Alexa Vega). Shaun Cassidy, whose credits as a producer include American Gothic and Invasion, is producing Ruby.
Perfect 10: Frasier's Peri Gilpin stars in this drama about teen gymnasts with dreams of making it in the Olympics.
