It's Round 2 For The Roman God of Love 2009/1/24 9:34:21

Rob Thomas, creator of Veronica Mars and the upcoming Starz series Party Down, was given the greenlight to resurrect his old show Cupid, a show that starred Jeremy Piven back in 1998. Cupid was voted by E! Online was their #4 show that was cancelled before it's time, and it seems like ABC agrees. Rob Thomas is indeed bringing back the same show, with a few tweaks, to primetime. Bobby Cannavale will now play the insane person that believes that he's really the Roman God of Love, Cupid. Or he could just be a good natured nutso under the care of a hot doctor Claire Allen, played by Sarah Paulson. As Cupid, he has to make 100 true love matches in order to get back into Mt. Olympus, or the Roman equivalent of Olympus anyway.

Cannavale seems to have a more childlike and friendlier take on Cupid than Piven did over 10 years ago. But what does he think? How does he see the role? Is he really Cupid? Or is he pretending he's a crazy man who only thinks he's a god. "I think that's the fun of the show," said Cannavale at the recent TCA press tour. "I think if we say he's one or the other, then it takes the mystery out of it, and I very much like playing something very specific in my head, and the writing supports it either way." The question was put to Thomas – as to whether there was more of a chance that the main character was actually Cupid this time around. "There's certain changes in the show that may take us out of exploring in the same level of detail this notion that he could simply be crazy," said Thomas. "We're doing eight episodes this year. I do think that there are storylines, particularly in 7 and 8, that do come back to this idea of Claire's sort of ongoing pursuit of curing this man of this delusion and finding clues that do hint that he is merely mortal."

The notion of re-doing a failed show is almost unheard of. Thomas just feels like he's in a better place and that the timing is much better for everything. "You know, I suppose that my desire, my decision to want to do this show again for ABC has less to do with how can we change this show because it was unsuccessful the last time. It just feels like a better time, a better network now, a better time slot for us," admitted Thomas. "We were on Saturdays at 10, and we weekly had our ass handed to us by Chuck Norris at that time. We were a show about being single and 30 on Saturdays at 10 on a network that really didn't know what it wanted to be."
