Harry Potter Sets Box Office Record for Franchise 2011/8/23 2:49:15

Harry Potter dvd boxset and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 earned $125.1 million domestically over the weekend, its biggest opening in the franchise's history, according to Box Office Mojo.

The record was $102.7 million for 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, according to The Associated Press. Its Friday opening of $61.2 million made the movie the biggest opening day of the year. Deathly Hallows: Part 1 has also landed at No. 6 for biggest opening weekends. (Dark Knight remains No. 1 with $158.4 million.)

So far, the J.K. Rowling-based franchise has earned more than $5.5 billion worldwide. The last installment of the films is scheduled for release in July.

Dreamwork's Megamind came in at No. 2 with $16.2 million, followed by Unstoppable and Due Date with $13.1 million and $9.1 million, respectively. Lionsgate's The Next Three Days debuted with $6.5 million, landing in fifth.

Rounding out the top 10: Morning Glory (No. 6, $5.2 million); Skyline (No. 7, $3.4 million); Red (No. 7, $2.5 million); For Colored Girls (No. 9, $2.4 million); and Fair Game (No. 10, $1.5 million).
