The CW is moving forward with development on a previously rumored Gossip Girl spinoff. Variety says the network is considering using an episode later in the season as a "backdoor pilot", introducing situations for a second series – and giving the network a chance to gauge the audience reaction while saving on the cost of producing an independent pilot.
Variety says that, somewhat surprisingly, the Gossip Girl TV spinoff would not be based on The It Girl, the series of books that is a spinoff of the original Gossip Girl books - The It Girl focuses on the character Jenny Humphrey, played on Gossip Girl by Taylor Momsen.
However, the spinoff would likely center on one of the existing Gossip Girl regular characters, though a new character could also be introduced in the backdoor pilot episode.
Variety says that the Gossip Girl spinoff may become more likely in the wake of Warner Bros.' decision to scrap the in-development project The Graysons, which would have centered on Dick Grayson, before he becomes Batman's sidekick Robin. The Graysons was going to be the tentpole of The CW's development slate – with that project gone, a Gossip Girl spinoff (Which is also produced by Warner Bros.) is likely looking even more desirable, thanks to its name value. Meanwhile, The CW is said to be considering a new version of Melrose Place, as a companion to their updated 90210.
