At the Television Critics Association press tour, the audience was treated to panel that consisted of Big Love's creator/producer Mark V. Olsen along with the stars of the show Bill Paxton, Jeanne Triplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnfer Goodwin, or as you might better know them The Henricksons; Bill, Barb, Nicolette and Margene. Season 3 of Big Love is set to kick off on Sunday, January 18th on HBO.
Yes, for most people Big Love is still "that polygamy show." But the fans know that there's much more to the show than you would find in that moniker. What will the upcoming season hold for viewers? Well, after watching a very intriguing and intense montage of clips set to "Lies" by The Black Keys, we were only left with a mish-mash of clues. Bill and his wives might just get "outed" to the world, and they must make a decision as whether they should flee their home or stand and live the lives that they believe in. And then there was a lot of thrilling fighting and suspense clips that were harder to pin down, but many involved heated confrontations with the incarcerated Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton).
Sevingy herself said that there's no real way to pin down the central theme of this season since it the show will take dynamic new turns each episode. "A Lost Boy turns up and I have to deal with him, and then he turns out to be a brother of mine," said Paxton. A "Lost Boy", of course, means a young man who's been excommunicated from a polygamist group. And due to Bill Henrickson's own past as a Lost Boy, he takes on this responsibility. "I don't think my character knows what he's capable of. There's a lot of back story to explore," confessed Paxton.
But getting heavily into the back-story of Bill and Barb is not really the focus of the writers and creators. Especially if it means having flashbacks, which they just don't feel should be a part of the show. They feel that it's much more interesting to hint at certain themes than show them directly to you. In fact, HBO had specifically told Olsen to slow down with his story back in season 1 since they felt he was burning through the plotlines and that they'd have nothing left come season 3. But there is still so much left in the characters separate histories to create new lavish textures for the show. Was Olsen upset that season 3 of Big Love was unable to fully capitalize on the FLDS scandal from last April. "HBO publicity was upset," Olsen laughed. They creators actually were happy to let the public digest the events that happened in Texas before they found their way back to the series.
One thing that's going to be explored more in season 3 is what Olsen referred to as the "Wives World" – which is a world that "exists just below Bill's radar when all three wives are together. It has a rich dynamic that we tried to tap even deeper this season." And although it's been a real challenge for Paxton to portray Henrickson, he states that he's "grown to admire the character greatly." Paxton added "there's a lot of Bill Henrickson that I'd like to be as Bill Paxton - as far as family goes."
