When I was a lazier version of the TV enthusiast I am today, I let references go by me without caring to look them up. And this was true even for the shows I had heartfelt love for – like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls. I think the problem was 1) The Internet was still dial-up only and so time to research things endlessly was limited 2) Those shows had so many references it seemed impossible to try and catch every one of them. But today I at least put one of those reference mysteries to rest. Rather than just look up the reference, I ended up fully experiencing it.
Which is to say, I watched a movie. More specifically, I watched a movie from 1992, referenced on Buffy the Vampire Slayer with this quote: “But I’m the one getting Single White Female’d here.” What I discovered through my research is that Single White Female is disturbing as all hell, but also a perfect 90’s flick. Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh fight to the death, and Stephen Tobolowsky aka Sandy from Glee is all gross and rapey (not a word, I know). Plus, there’s really cool architecture – which I am probably weird to have taken so much notice of.
Sadly, there’s not much trivia for the movie on IMDB. Something not mentioned is that Jessica Lundy is in the film as simply “Talkative Applicant”. There is also “Mannish Applicant”, “Exotic Applicant” and “Perfect Applicant”. Ha.
If you want to tie this movie to Twilight: Eclipse, you needn’t look far. The movies have/will have the same composer: Howard Shore. You could even tie this to Lost in a way, because Jennifer Jason Leigh turned down the part of Libby which went to Cynthia Watros.
