The two American Idol finalists speak about their futures, and Allen finally tackles the hot-button topic: his chest hair.
He may be easy on the eyes, but Kris Allen--American Idol's season eight winner--is not a man with a fiery personality or rock star persona. That could help explain why many fans had their fist through their TV sets and their middle finger raised to the AI voters of America Wednesday. Only a star-in-the-making like Adam Lambert could inspire that kind of backlash.
Even in the pathetic drone of a conference call, Lambert shines like a bright beacon of hope for the music industry as we know it, which, lets face it, has been a little cookie-cutter in recent years.
"My view is that music is a little too specific lately," Lambert said. "[Marketers] try to put one box around every artist, one genre. I don't have to go about it that way. I want my album to be cohesive, but with a collection of different sounds. I don't want to do one specific genre, I'm more about fusion. "
Seemingly unmoved by his loss of the title, Lambert said he's only concerned with becoming a recording artist right now and "breaking the mold" of popular music. He let this persona shine through during the competition, dawning wacky fashions (notably Bob Macky rhinestone shoulder pads at the finale) and singing songs of incredible variety and range.
In stark contrast was Allen, who sang songs written in the genre of rock or rat pack, but with the same old humdrum sound of acoustic guitar notes and whiny vocals. But I guess that's what the kids like these days. Allen put it best when he said, "I am not a man of many words or emotions, but it comes out in my music. I'm kind of laid back and low key and sometimes I stick my head out. I guess it worked," he said.
In regards to his anticipated album release, Allen said he was looking to put out an album that "moved people" with his signature acoustic sound and maybe even a few of his own songs. Yeah, yeah, we've heard it all before.
However, the one interesting thing he really had to say was about his lack of chest hair, a rumored insecurity of Allen's.
"I do have a little bit, but it's really patchy, I want man chest hair."
Isn't the American Idol title enough for you, man? Title, shmitle--Lambert is the one with the real withstanding career, the likeability of Justin Timberlake mixed with the evolution of Prince.
In the words of Simon, sorry Kris Allen.
