Sarah Polley, the show's screenwriter and producer, won the rights to the original novel four years ago, but she failed to complete her desire to make it into a film.Alias Grace Season 1 Mary Harron was directing the show in Ontario, Canada, in August. Grace Marks is a poor, young Irish immigrant who worked as a family maid in upper Canada. In 1843, she and her servant James McDermott were accused of murdering their employer, Thomas Kinnear and the housekeeper, Anna Paquin. As a housekeeper and mistress of Thomas Kinnear, she was friendly to Grace at first, but seeing Thomas Kinnear become more and more interested in her beautiful Grace, she became jealous and began to resent Grace.
